Sheila Mullen

Sheila Mullen was trained at Glasgow School of Art. She has exhibited widely nationally and internationally and her work is found in many private collections. Her paintings are characterised by their bold use of colour and dramatic brushwork. Composition and colour are used to heighten the emotional response in the viewer and is used to great effect in her paintings based on the Border Ballads and other traditional Scottish stories which are currently showing in the Mill. The paintings may initially appear difficult to make out, or rather abstract, but as one gazes into them the characters and personalities of the stories resolve and the picture becomes clear. Sheila's rich and powerful paintings are the perfect marriage of artisitic technique and the sometimes magical, sometimes frightening world of the Ballads.
